Biography

Ted Arthur Haggard was born in Indiana. His father, J. M. Haggard, was a veterinarian in Yorktown, Indiana, and founded an international charismatic ministry featured in a PBS Middletown documentary. Haggard has said that he was molested when he was seven years old.

At age 16, Haggard became a born-again Christian after hearing a sermon from evangelist Bill Bright in Dallas, Texas, and reading Christian apologetics by C. S. Lewis. In high school, as a co-editor of the school newspaper in 1974, Haggard published articles about services for preventing and dealing with pregnancies and STDs. These articles caused a scandal in his small town and led to a free-press lawsuit.

After his first year in college, Haggard felt called by God to become a pastor. He had been studying telecommunications with a minor in journalism but decided to pursue ministry instead. Haggard attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated in 1978. He briefly served as a minister in the Southern Baptist Convention.

In 2010, Haggard and his wife, Gayle, founded Saint James Church in Colorado Springs. As of 2022, Haggard continues to serve as the founding pastor of Saint James Church.

Family

Haggard married Gayle Alcorn in 1978. They have five children: Christy, born in 1981; Marcus, born in 1983, who is the founder and former pastor of Boulder Street Church in Colorado Springs; Jonathan, born in 1987; Alex, born in 1990; and Elliott, born in 1993.

Ministry

In November 1984, while serving as an associate pastor at Bethany World Prayer Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Haggard’s mentor, Danny Ost, had a vision of Haggard starting a church in Colorado Springs. Following this vision, Haggard moved to Colorado and founded New Life Church. The church began with 22 people meeting in the basement of Haggard’s home, eventually growing to rented spaces in strip malls.

After 22 years, New Life Church operated from a large campus in northern Colorado Springs, with a congregation of 14,000 people. In 1993, during his “first prayer journey” to Israel, Haggard stood on the Mount of Olives and felt the Holy Spirit speak to him. He wrote in his book, The Life-Giving Church, that from that moment on, he felt blessed with apostolic power, recognizing that his only challenges were personal, not external.

Under Haggard’s leadership, New Life Church founded the Association of Life-Giving Churches, which was recognized as a denomination by the U.S. National Association of Evangelicals. By 2006, it included about 300 congregations, according to Harper’s Magazine.
