Unfortunately, his mother later remarried into an abusive relationship, which caused a lot of problems for the family. After that, there was a third marriage, but it ended in divorce. At the age of ten, Matthew became a Christian after attending a mission service led by Luis Palau at London’s QPR football stadium. Mike Pilavachi, a youth leader at an Anglican church, encouraged him to start leading worship during his teenage years.
Matthew began attending St Andrew’s Chorleywood, an Anglican church in Hertfordshire, where he learned to play the guitar. By the time he was 20, he was leading worship services and had released his first record. In 1993, he co-founded Soul Survivor, a global Christian movement and annual music festival for teenagers, with his pastor Mike Pilavachi. From 1994 to 2002, Matthew was the worship leader at Soul Survivor Church in Watford, England.
