His father, Jack, founded and named the church after his own father.

MacArthur also served as a faculty representative for Talbot Theological Seminary from 1966 to 1969. On February 9, 1969, he became the third and youngest pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California.

The Grace media team created MacArthur’s daily radio and TV program, Grace to You. It began in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977 and is now broadcast around the world.

In 1985, MacArthur became President of Los Angeles Baptist College, now The Master’s University. The following year, he was appointed President of the new Master’s Seminary.

On June 5, 2011, MacArthur achieved a personal goal by preaching through the entire New Testament at Grace Community Church, where he had served for over 43 years.
