Charles Rozell Swindoll was born on October 18, 1934, in El Campo, Texas. He was the youngest of three children born to Earl and Lovell Swindoll.

He attended Charles H. Milby High School in Houston. As a child, he had a stutter that made public speaking difficult. He managed it better in high school, thanks to his drama teacher, Dick Nieme.

Chuck played in the school marching band and orchestra. He learned to play all the woodwind instruments, but the clarinet was his favorite.

After high school, he studied mechanical engineering and worked for Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston.

Swindoll served in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed in San Francisco and then sent to Okinawa. He played in the Marine Corps Marching Band as part of his duties.

On June 18, 1955, he married Cynthia Ann Parker, a former pianist from a Baptist Church in Galena Park, Texas. They had four children, 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

In 1959, he was honorably discharged from the Marines. He then attended Dallas Theological Seminary, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Master of Theology degree four years later.

In 2020, Chuck Swindoll retired as the senior pastor of Stonebriar Community Church but continued to serve as the Chancellor of Dallas Theological Seminary.

In 1998, Swindoll founded Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The church initially held services at Collin County Community College (now Collin College) before moving to its permanent location on Legendary Drive. Stonebriar Community Church is known for its missionary work in India and other countries and is not affiliated with any specific denomination.
