Tragically, her older brother was killed in a shooting in front of his children while Serita was in college. This grief led her into an abusive relationship with a teenage boy.
As a child, Serita was bullied because of her weight. She turned to sex, drugs, and alcohol to fit in. Her life changed dramatically after she was baptized and experienced a spiritual renewal.
In an interview with Called Magazine, Serita shared that she was raised in the church but went astray after joining the wrong crowd. She said:
“I got in with the wrong crowd and started doing their thing, which I thought was my thing, and it was too fast for a little ole country girl like me.”
