Biography

Nona Jones was an unwanted child. When her mother found out she was pregnant, she cried, even though she was married to Nona’s father, who wanted a child. Her mother didn’t want to be a mother. Two months before Nona turned two, her father passed away. Her mother moved to a new state to be with a man she barely knew. Over the next two years, her mother had several boyfriends before settling with a man who became her live-in partner. The abuse started after that.

When Nona was just 5 years old, her mother’s boyfriend began hugging her inappropriately when her mother wasn’t around. Although Nona was too young to understand, it frightened her. She started locking her bedroom door when her mother worked late, but she learned to pick the lock with a straightened wire hanger.

Nona first told her mother about the abuse, and her mother had him arrested. However, she brought him back home because she needed his money for bills. The abuse resumed, and this time, Nona chose to remain silent.

Today, Nona Jones is an international speaker, preacher, author, and the head of global faith-based partnerships at Facebook. She has held executive leadership roles in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

Outside of her professional life, Nona is a talented vocalist, songwriter, worship leader, and musician. She wrote, composed, and co-produced her Billboard-charting Gospel album, Take Me. She is also an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, having completed her thirteenth half-marathon in Paris. Nona has written five books.

Family Life

Nona is the director of Open Door Ministries with her husband, Pastor Tim. They have two sons, Timothy Jr. and Isaac, and a Goldendoodle named Shiloh.

Ministry

In sixth grade, Nona received her first church invitation from a classmate. She had never heard of God or the Bible before, so she wasn’t sure what to expect at her first service. When the preacher said, “God is a father to the fatherless,” it touched her deeply. This made her curious about God, and at age 11, she started her own Bible study. At twelve, she made Jesus her Lord and Savior.

Over the next five years, Nona became more involved in ministry. She became a worship leader, youth leader, and eventually a minister-in-training.

Nona received her Gospel ministry license in Jacksonville, Florida, at age 17. After she started preaching in Florida, she began receiving invitations to preach nationwide. She gained a reputation as a popular preacher and public speaker while attending the University of Florida in Gainesville and speaking at local churches.

Career

Nona achieved great success after earning a Bachelor of Communications and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida. At 23, she was appointed to her first executive position with a Fortune 100 company. She then moved to a public sector role, managing public affairs and regulatory strategy for a municipal utility with over $500 million in annual revenues. For her leadership, she received the Robert F. Roundtree Rising Star Award from the American Public Power Association before turning 35.

Next, Nona joined the nonprofit sector’s C-Suite, where she developed the external affairs strategy for a state-wide network of alternative schools. She worked on resources, brand strategy, advocacy, and program expansion, and became prominent in the juvenile justice reform movement. She was a keynote speaker at the UN GirlUp International Summit and Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Youth Violence Prevention Summit.

Nona was then invited to Facebook to develop the company’s global faith-based partnerships strategy. This role allowed her to use her ministry and business skills in technology, which she had not worked in before. She has worked with major churches and influential religious figures worldwide, helping thousands of church leaders through social media and social ministry.

Nona Jones Weightloss

Nona shared on Instagram that she was classified as morbidly obese for most of her life. At 26, she weighed 276 pounds.

She used food to numb the pain from childhood abuse. She was teased in school for being overweight and turned to bulimia in high school and college to lose weight. Although this helped temporarily, her underlying issues caused her to overeat again after marriage, leading her to weigh 276 pounds by age 30.

One morning, after walking a short distance, she struggled to breathe and felt generally miserable. Looking at her son, she decided to make a change. She had tried many fad diets but had not yet tried eating clean and exercising. She chose to live a fit lifestyle.

Nona wasn’t a runner but signed up for the Disney Princess Half Marathon, which was nine months away. She started the Couch-to-5K program, exercised every morning, and cut out sweets, fried food, and junk food, drinking only water. By race day, she had lost 60 pounds and another 40 pounds in the next six months. She has maintained this weight loss for over ten years.

The only surgery she had was to remove excess skin from her abdomen last year. Her surgeon said that no amount of crunches could remove it. The excess skin symbolized years of self-loathing. Removing it helped her see it as a physical representation of her painful past.
