Biography
Christopher Dwayne Tomlin was born in 1972 in Grand Saline, Texas, to Donna and Connie Tomlin. He has two younger brothers, Ryan and Cory. Chris received his first guitar from his father and learned to play by listening to Willie Nelson albums.
He wrote his first worship song at the age of fourteen and began leading worship in his youth group during high school. After graduating from Grand Saline High School in 1990, Chris enrolled in Tyler Junior College (TJC) with plans to pursue a career in medicine or physical therapy. However, he later earned a degree in psychology from Texas A&M.
Chris is a member of CompassionArt, a charity and songwriting team that released an album in 2008. In 2014, he joined the board of directors of CURE International, a nonprofit that provides medical care to children in developing countries.
In May 2008, Chris announced that he was leaving Austin Stone Community Church to help co-found a new church in Atlanta, Georgia, with Louie Giglio. Passion City Church held its first service on February 15, 2009, with Chris serving as one of the worship leaders.
Education
After graduating from high school in 1992, Chris Tomlin attended Texas A&M University to pursue a career in medicine. While there, he became more involved with Breakaway, a student Christian organization, and eventually became the worship leader.
In 1994, Chris earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M. After college, he led worship at various Texas camps, including the Dawson McAllister Youth Conferences. While at Breakaway, Chris participated in a Bible study led by Louie Giglio, the founder of Choice Ministries. In 1997, Chris and Louie co-founded Passion Conferences.

Chris Tomlin released Inside Your Love independently in 1995. Authentic was released by Sparrow Records in 1998.
In 2000, Tomlin signed with sixstepsrecords, a division of Passion Conferences. His first nationally released solo project, The Noise We Make, came out in 2001 and featured the song “Forever.” In 2002, he released the live EP 545 and his second studio album, Not to Us.
Since signing with sixstepsrecords, Tomlin has released nine full-length studio albums. Arriving was his first album to chart on Billboard’s Hot Christian Albums chart and the Billboard 200. He has six Hot Christian Albums chart-toppers, and his 2013 album Burning Lights was the fourth contemporary Christian album to top the Billboard 200.
Tomlin has also released one live album, recorded at Austin Music Hall, and two Christmas albums (2009, 2015), both of which topped Billboard’s Holiday Albums chart.
Tomlin has performed with modern Christian artists like Delirious?, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, and MercyMe. He has headlined several tours and worked with Passion Conferences on national and international tours and events. He has also attended other conferences and festivals, such as Grand Saline’s Salt Festival in Texas, Hillsong’s 2007 conference, and the SoCal Harvest in Anaheim.
On June 14, 2007, Tomlin’s version of “Indescribable” was used as the official wake-up call for Space Shuttle flight STS-117 for flight specialist Patrick Forrester.

Chris Tomlin has won 23 GMA Dove Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for his 2012 album And If Our God Is for Us…. He also has two RIAA platinum albums. Time magazine called him the “most often sung artist anywhere” because of the popularity of his songs in many contemporary churches. His 2013 album Burning Lights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the fourth contemporary Christian music album to achieve this.
In 2009, Tomlin received two Visionary Award nominations: Male Entertainer of the Year and Song of the Year for “Jesus Messiah.”
